We spent the entire day there digging and screening through the tailing pile. I took my boys down to the Oceanview Mine the weekend of Labor Day, 2014. Our last trip to Himalaya was much more fruitful. We did find one nice pink tourmaline, two crunchy aquamarine, and a kunzite, plus a couple fair size quartz. Black tourmaline was pretty common, but for all their hype on media about tourmaline, the few that we, in fact anyone, were finding, were extremely far between and mostly shards. Only feldspar, feldspar, and well feldspar. But there aren't even colorful common rocks to find. The long haired lady was very nice and helpful, but the dark haired lady was terse and rude.įor someone who doesn't know what to look for, it might be a good time. They did extend the mining time, but by that time everyone was hot and children were crying. We all had to stand around and wait (the only shade was umbrellas you could rent but not angle into the sun, and picnic tables at one end). Our 4wd was fine, but a low profile vehicle would not make it.Īfter all the hype about being on time, the orientation didn't start until 10:30. They opened the gate about 9 to let us drive up. We received FOUR text messages reminding us to NOT BE LATE, to be there at 9:30 SHARP.
