Some communities around Cherokee already offer beer and wine sales. Since the tribe opened its casino in 1997, gambling has had an estimated $155 million annual revenue and employed more than 3,000 workers. Each of the tribe's 13,500 members gets a check twice a year from gambling revenue and the most recent payout was about $4,000 each. Six years ago, the conservative Cherokee community lashed out when alcohol sales were proposed and the tribal council stopped a push for a referendum. The outcome of the referendum request isn't clear.
